Cohuna waterfront, recreation reserve precinct works continue

Efforts to revitalise Cohuna’s Apex Park precinct and entrance to the Cohuna Recreation Reserve are continuing, with construction works to begin in the coming weeks.
The works, which form part of the $3.4 million Cohuna CBD and Waterfront Connections project, will improve vehicle access to the Apex Park and Cohuna Recreation Reserve precinct.
“Recently completed improvements to Apex Park, which included the installation of a new barbecue area shelter with connecting footpaths, have provided residents and visitors to Cohuna an area to experience our waterfront lifestyle,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.
“The popularity of this area will increase once the Cohuna Beach is completed in October, and with the Cohuna Skate Park redevelopment and construction of the Cohuna All Abilities Play Space to occur in early 2021, it is important that measures are in place to ensure greater safety for pedestrian and road users.”
As part of these works, a roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis roads, providing easier access for vehicles accessing the Cohuna Recreation Reserve, Cohuna Swimming Pool, Cohuna Bowls Club and Cohuna Tennis Club.
Tennis Road will be realigned to provide safer vehicle access, with Cohuna Recreation Reserve visitors to benefit from the sealing of the road between Tennis Road to the venue’s recently improved entrance.
“The construction of this roundabout and sealing of the roadway to the entrance to the Cohuna Recreation Reserve will benefit users and visitors to this area, which is used throughout the year,” Mr O’Reilly said.
The Cohuna Island Road works also involves the sealing of the Apex Park car park and installation of new additional car parking spaces on the western side of Cohuna Island Road, bringing the number of spaces across the area to 28.
“Due to the extensive amount of works planned within this precinct, residents are advised that speed reductions and lane closures will be in place along Cohuna Island Road, with car parking spaces to be reduced,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“Apex Park will continue to be open whilst these works occur, with parking located nearby on the southern side of the Cohuna Island Road Bridge.
“Council thanks the Cohuna community for their understanding when these works occur and looks forward to seeing residents and visitors benefiting from these improvements.”
The Cohuna CBD and Waterfront Connections projects are supported by the State Government’s $2.7 billion Building Works package, with initial projects identified as part of the Waterfront Masterplan process. Future works within the CBD precinct and connections to the Gunbower Creek will be determined with community input on the design over the coming months.
