Container deposit collection scheme begins

Residents will be able to receive 10 cents for each eligible can, carton and bottle returned to any container deposit scheme location across Victoria from today.

The State Government initiative aims to increase the recycling of drink cans, bottles and cartons and reduce the amount of litter Victorians produce by up to 50 per cent.

“Container deposit schemes have been running across Australia since South Australia introduced its program in the 1970s, and are a great way to be rewarded for reducing waste,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“The scheme is also a great way for community groups to raise additional funds, either through the collection of containers or by residents donating their refunds to these causes.”

Local businesses, community organisations and sporting groups were encouraged to consider applying to operate container deposit scheme collection points, with hundreds of these locations now operational.

“The container deposit scheme will also support charities and community groups, with organisations that register to become a donation partner eligible to receive proceeds from people who drop off containers and choose to support local charities,” Mr Rollinson said.
