The adoption of Gannawarra Shire Council’s 2024/2025 Budget and the awarding of funding to projects supported by Council’s Community Grants Program were the highlights of Council’s June 2024 meeting, held at the Kerang Senior Citizens Centre on 26 June 2024.
The major item of discussion was Council’s 2024/2025 Budget, which outlines how Council will spend the $53.373 million of revenue generated through rates, charges and grants during 2024/2025, with an underlying surplus of $389,000 predicted.
The 2024/2025 Budget includes a $29.158 million capital works program - $22.633 million of which is supported by the State and Federal governments.
Meanwhile, 14 projects, ranging from facility refurbishments to community programs, will share in $49,740.20 of funding from Council’s 2024 Community Grants Program.
Councillors also requested for an additional 16 events and projects, valued at $71,715, that had been considered for support via the Community Grants Program to be referred to the Gannawarra Community Resilience Committee for consideration as part of the Flood Recovery Program. These projects included disaster management workshops and training, community domestic violence awareness training, food programs and community celebrations.
Other outcomes of the meeting included:
- Moving the September 2024 Council Meeting from Wednesday, 18 September to Monday, 16 September to ensure the meeting would not occur during the local government caretaker period;
- Receiving and noting the summary of discussions from the Audit and Risk Committee meeting held on 7 May 2024;
- Adoption of the revised Gannawarra Aquatic Strategy, with Council to seek funding to undertake detailed designs and business cases for the three identified aquatic projects at Cohuna and Kerang featured in the strategy;
- Endorse the draft Fair Access policy and action plan for community feedback, with engagement to occur between 27 June and 22 July; and
- Adoption of the reviewed Flags policy and Community Flag Schedule, which includes flying the Rainbow Flag on Council-managed flagpoles on the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex discrimination, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) annually as a statement of solidarity and inclusivity towards the LGBTQIA+ community.
