Gannawarra Shire Council continues to monitor flooding throughout the three rivers that pass through the municipality, with above-average rainfall predicted for later this week which may impact the current situation.

As of 3pm today, moderate flooding is occurring in the Avoca and Loddon rivers south of the municipality, with moderate flooding continuing along the Murray River at Barham and Koondrook.

Minor flooding is currently occuring along the Loddon River at Appin South, with river levels forecast to rise later this week as upstream floodwaters make their way downstream.

“It is important to note that the Gannawarra is significantly better prepared for any moderate or major flood events thanks to the installation of levees at Kerang and Quambatook,” Council Acting Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson, said.

“As with any emergency situation, including floods, responsible agencies such as VICSES and Victoria Police may approach Council for assistance if required, be it equipment or personnel.”

Should residents be seeking assistance, sandbags or other resources in relation to flood protection, residents are encouraged to contact VICSES on 132 500 as the lead agency in emergency situations.

Residents are advised to stay informed in relation to river levels and road closures by relying on these trusted sources:

Council will also seek to provide updated flood information via Gannawarra Shire Council’s Facebook page and at www.gsc.vic.gov.au/floods

“Flood waters can be deceptive, so please do not attempt to walk or ride through swollen rivers or creeks,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Motorists are reminded to not drive through floodwater. A small vehicle can be swept away in water that is at least 15 centimetres deep.”
