A new Gannawarra Shire Council-led campaign is highlighting the need for respectful behaviour between residents and Council staff.

Launched earlier today, the Zero Tolerance, Be Kind campaign follows on an increasing number of reported incidents of aggressive behaviour towards local government staff, including Gannawarra Shire personnel.

“Council appreciates the behaviour of the majority of residents and others who interact with our dedicated staff, however there has been a recent increase in the number of incidents of occupational violence occurring towards our team members,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“Incidents involving verbal or physical abuse towards staff will not be tolerated. These are behaviours that our staff should not have to put up with in their workplace.

“We understand that residents may be frustrated at times, however Council has a legal obligation to undertake the work that we do to make our community a better place to live and work.”

As part of the Zero Tolerance, Be Kind campaign, Council will promote positive behaviours via posters on display at its Customer Service Centres, Gannawarra Library Service branches and children’s services locations.

“By acting in a respectful manner, Council staff can work with our residents to resolve differences and issues in a proactive manner,” Mr Rollinson said.

“There are procedures in place for those who may not agree with Council’s actions, which are listed in our Complaint Handling policy.”
