A local partnership is working together to ensure safe access to family violence support services across the Gannawarra as the Coronavirus pandemic continues.

Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said that Gannawarra Shire Council, Northern District Community Health, Victoria Police, the Orange Door – Mallee and local hospitals are concerned that people experiencing family violence are not reporting due to fear and concern of being in close contact with the perpetrator.

“As we continue with social distancing and the need to stay home, we know that victims of family violence may be in a situation that makes it harder to reach out for support,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“It is especially important at this time to check in with family, friends and neighbours and let them know of the support services available, such as Safe Steps which is available 24 hours each day.”

Northern District Community Health Chief Executive Officer, Mandy Hutchinson said that the Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre can provide information and advice about safety planning and emergency accommodation to keep victims safe from family violence.

“We know that for some residents, particularly women and their children, their home is not necessarily a safe place,” Ms Hutchinson said.

“Residents experiencing family violence can phone the 24/7 Safe Steps family violence response phone line on 1800 015 188, or email safesteps@safesteps.org.au and a family violence crisis specialist will reply to you as soon as possible.

“Northern District Community Health can also arrange Telehealth sessions with the Orange Door – Mallee as well as Mallee Sexual Assault Unit and Mallee Domestic Violence Services to provide ongoing support. Telehealth sessions can be arranged by phoning NDCH on (03) 5451 0200.”

Victoria Police continues to ensure a strong presence in all communities across the state, including the Gannawarra Shire during this time.

Responding to family violence matters is a daily priority for police, who are focussed on supporting victims and holding perpetrators to account.

“If you need police assistance or in an emergency, always call Triple Zero (000). If you can’t get to a phone, ask someone else to do it for you. Victoria Police is there to support you,” Mayor Learmonth said.
