Gannawarra Shire Council has determined the future of two of its infrastructure assets at Kerang and Quambatook after undertaking a four-week community engagement period in late 2024.

Council determined at its February 2025 meeting to permanently suspend on-site cattle sales services at the Kerang Saleyards and identify feasible rationalisation options for the site. Council will also sell a vacant block of residentially zoned land located at 2 Patterson Street, Quambatook via the open market.

Decisions regarding the future of both sites were made following a community engagement campaign held during November and December 2024, which saw Council receive 19 submissions regarding both sites and two other locations at Quambatook - three residential units located at 9-11 Guthrie Street, Quambatook and the Quambatook Senior Citizens Hall.

“Council is committed to providing services to our communities and continuing to being economically viable,” Mayor Garner Smith said.

“These locations were identified during a high-level review that focused on non-core infrastructure assets that are not directly linked to any services currently provided by Council.”

As a result of the decision, Council will determine future options for the Kerang Saleyards site, which has not held sheep sales on-site since 2008 and cattle sales on-site since 2019.

“Council will work to determine what options are available for the saleyards to maximise the benefits to community and Council,” Mayor Smith said.

“If a form of sale of this site is recommended, Council will engage with the community regarding potential options.”

Council will also begin the process to sell a 1,400m2 block of land at 2 Patterson Street, Quambatook, which has no linkages to Council’s current services.

Meanwhile, Council will consider the future of three residential units located at 9-11 Guthrie Street, Quambatook and the Quambatook Senior Citizens Hall later in the year.

“My fellow Councillors and I were in agreeance that following the tragic events of mid-January that continue to impact the community, now is not the right time to determine the future of these Council-owned assets,” Mayor Smith said.

“Council will continue to engage with the community regarding the future of both buildings, with a recommendation to be presented to the August 2025 Council Meeting for consideration.”
