GANNAWARRA INITIATIVE NAMED AS A FINALIST IN THE 2017 COMMUNITY HART AWARDS!
MEDIA RELEASE
A commemoration to the Stolen Generation has been named as a finalist in the prestigious 2017 Community HART awards.
Mayor Brian Gibson said the HART awards (Helping Achieve Reconciliation Together); recognise local governments and community organisations who work in partnership.
“Council has a fantastic relationship with the Kerang Elders and, together with local agencies including Mallee District Aboriginal Services, Northern District Community Health, Cohuna District Hospital, Kerang District Health and Victoria Police, are committed to continuing to build relationships, respect and understanding amongst the community,” he said.
Council have been shortlisted as a finalist for a Stolen Generation plaque unveiling which was held in March.
“The ceremony was very moving and a powerful message to support and commemorate the Stolen Generation,” Mayor Gibson explains.
“The feature of the ceremony was the unveiling of a plaque, located in the sensory garden at the Gannawarra Children’s Centre, and a performance of ‘The Creation Dance’ by Tyipen Kwe.”
The Community HART awards recognise Victorian initiatives that contribute to local reconciliation outcomes, and the winners will be presented at an event in Melbourne on Friday 2 June 2017 at the Koorie Heritage Trust, during Reconciliation Week.
Council’s Director Community Wellbeing Mandy Hutchinson said three community events are also being held in Gannawarra during Reconciliation Week.
“Reconciliation Week is a great time for schools, workplaces and businesses to join in the reconciliation conversation,” Ms Hutchinson said.
“I encourage all members of the local community to come along and join in the celebrations.”
Community celebrations are planned for Kerang, Cohuna and Koondrook including a Welcome to Country ceremony, Presentation by our Elders, Musical Performance, Storytime and a light morning tea/BBQ Lunch.
