How to help bushfire affected communities
Published on 03 January 2020
Gannawarra Shire Council residents are doing their bit to support bushfire affected communities in eastern Victoria and southeastern New South Wales.
Premier Daniel Andrews has declared a State of Disaster for six Victorian Local Government Areas – Alpine, East Gippsland, Mansfield, Towong, Wangaratta and Wellington – and three alpine resorts due to the significant and widespread danger to life or property.
Similar warnings are in place for communities in southeastern New South Wales, with conditions to deteriorate during the weekend.
“Gannawarra Shire Council’s thoughts are with all communities that are impacted by the current fire crisis,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.
“Images of the devastation coming from these areas are confronting, with residents wanting to help out in any way they can.
“Currently, the best way to help out is through monetary donations, as this assists those on the ground to help where it is needed the most and immediately.”
A Bushfire Disaster Appeal has been established to support community members affected by the bushfires in Victoria. Donations can be made at any Bendigo Bank branch or online at www.emergency.vic.gov.au/relief.
The Australian Red Cross (www.redcross.org.au) and The Salvation Army (www.salvationarmy.org.au) have also initiated their own disaster appeals, with details how to donate available on their respective websites.
“There are other charities that are also overseeing their own bushfire appeals, but when donating money to a disaster relief cause, always make sure you use a registered, reputable charity,” Mayor Learmonth said.
Emergency management personnel are working with local councils in the affected areas to assess the needs of their communities.
“Council is aware that local volunteers are assisting with efforts as the impacts of the fire disaster continue to be felt across Victoria and New South Wales,” Mayor Learmonth said.
“I thank community members for expressing their kindness to their fellow Australians who are in great need of support at this time.”
