Work to transform Kerang’s central business district will resume on Monday, 22 April and continue through to June.

As part of Stages 3 and 4 of the Kerang CBD Redevelopment, efforts to rejuvenate the northeastern corner of the intersection of Fitzroy and Wellington streets will occur, building on work completed prior to Easter to rejuvenate the Wellington Street section of Kerang’s business area.

“The transformation of Kerang’s central business district is nearing its completion, which marks the end of many years of work dating back to the redevelopment of Victoria Square in 2017,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“Residents and visitors continue to make the most of improvements completed along Scoresby and Victoria streets as part of the Kerang CBD Redevelopment, with businesses along Wellington Street soon to see these benefits.

“These improvements would not be possible without support from higher levels of government; in this instance the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which is fully funding these works.”

As part of the planned work, new paving will be laid outside Graeme Hayes Real Estate during 22-24 April, ensuring minimal disruption to Kerang’s ANZAC Day parade occurring on Thursday, 25 April.

Attention will then turn to the northwestern corner of Victoria and Wellington streets, with new paving will be laid outside SportsPower Kerang and a retaining wall installed between Monday, 29 April and Saturday, 4 May.

The proposed retaining wall will also promote the story behind the installation of the Karlie McDonald memorial clock, located in the middle of the intersection of Victoria and Wellington streets. Erected in 1933, the clock honours the former Kerang High School teacher who died in 1927 whilst saving three students from drowning in the Loddon River.

Work will continue along Wellington Street between Albert and Nolan streets throughout May and June, with planned improvements along Fitzroy Street between Scoresby and Wellington streets, and outside Walkers IGA in Victoria Street scheduled to be completed by August 2024.

“Shoppers and business owners are advised that pedestrian access around work sites will be diverted whilst these improvements occur, however Council will endeavour to keep these disruptions to the shortest possible time period,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Council thanks shoppers and business owners for their understanding as these improvements occur.”
