Kerang CBD redevelopment works resume Tuesday, 12 March

Work to rejuvenate Kerang’s central business district and highlight the story behind one of the town’s iconic structures will begin on Tuesday, 12 March.
As part of Stages 3 and 4 of the Kerang CBD Redevelopment, the next section of work will occur at the northwestern corner of the intersection of Victoria and Wellington streets, outside SportsPower Kerang.
Fully funded by the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, the project aims to revive Kerang’s central business district, building on work undertaken within Victoria Square, Scoresby Street and Victoria Street.
“These works are the final section to be completed along the Victoria Street section of Kerang’s central business district, which residents, visitors and business owners are already benefiting from,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“Recently completed work at the northeastern corner of the intersection of Victoria and Wellington streets has rejuvenated this part of the town, with visitors making the most of new outdoor dining spaces outside the Kerang Sports and Entertainment Venue.”
As part of the planned work, new paving will be laid outside SportsPower Kerang and a retaining wall featuring seating to be poured.
The proposed retaining wall will also promote the story behind the installation of the Karlie McDonald memorial clock, located in the middle of the intersection of Victoria and Wellington streets. Erected in 1933, the clock honours the former Kerang High School teacher who died in 1927 whilst saving three students from drowning in the Loddon River.
“For nearly 100 years the memorial clock tower has stood as a pillar to Karlie McDonald’s sacrifice, and the Kerang CBD Redevelopment aims to build on this legacy,” Mr Rollinson said.
“The plaque recognising Karlie’s story currently located outside SportsPower Kerang will be placed within the new retaining wall, whilst new lighting to be installed around the clock at a later date will illuminate this iconic structure for many years to come.”
Improvements associated with the Kerang CBD Redevelopment will also occur along Wellington Street between Nolan and Albert streets, Fitzroy Street between Scoresby and Wellington streets, and outside Walkers IGA in Victoria Street up to August 2024.
“Shoppers and business owners are advised that pedestrian access around work sites will be diverted whilst these improvements occur, however Council will endeavour to keep these disruptions to the shortest possible time period,” Mr Rollinson said.
“Council thanks shoppers and business owners for their understanding as these improvements occur.”
