Kerang to Koondrook Rail Trail planning boost

Efforts to develop a rail trail between Kerang and Koondrook have been boosted after Gannawarra Shire Council received State Government funding to support the project’s planning process.
Council will receive $500,000 from the State Government’s Regional Development Victoria Investment Fast Track Fund to undertake essential planning works to support the construction of a 22-kilometre cycling and walking trail between Kerang and Koondrook.
“The Kerang to Koondrook Rail Trail is an important project for the Gannawarra, as it will link in with the Murray River Adventure Trail and connect the Murray River to the iconic Ramsar-listed Kerang Lakes,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.
“Once completed, this project will drive economic growth to the region through increased visitation and expenditure, while enhancing community wellbeing and liveability, and employment opportunities for local trades and indigenous workforce through construction and new product development.”

Council will use the funding to assist with the planning, cultural assessment and design of the project, which is proposed to utilise the former tramway route between Kerang and Koondrook.
“This planning work will provide valuable evidence that Council can use when seeking State and Federal Government funding for construction of this transformational project,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“Council thanks the State Government for their support and looks forward to working with the community on this significant project.”
