Motorists are reminded to adhere to altered speed limits around schools throughout the Gannawarra when the 2021 school year begins this week.

Children will begin the school year at kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools at Cohuna, Kerang, Koondrook, Lake Charm, Leitchville and Murrabit from Thursday, 28 January.

“The Gannawarra’s warm start to the year provides the best opportunity for school children throughout the municipality to take the opportunity to either walk, cycle or scoot to and from school,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.

“Getting actively to school supports a healthy lifestyle and helps children learn better in the classroom. It also supports children to develop their confidence and independence.”

Speed limits around the Gannawarra’s schools are 40 kilometres per hour, with school crossings in operation at a number of locations.

“Motorists are reminded to keep an eye out for extra traffic around our schools and to be mindful of children as they travel to and from school,” Mayor Gillingham said.

“Please also remember that pedestrians have right of way at all manned and unmanned school crossings.”
