Proposed road safety improvements feedback closing soon

Time is running out for residents to have their say on eight proposed road safety projects planned for the Gannawarra Shire, with feedback accepted up to 5pm Friday, 17 January.

Council is seeking residents’ views on proposed projects for Cohuna and Kerang that will benefit from funding from the Transport Accident Commission’s Safe Local Roads and Street Program, which will deliver safety improvements on Victoria’s highest risk local roads, intersections and precincts.

“Council thanks the Transport Accident Commission for providing funding via its Safer Local Roads and Streets Program, which will be used to undertake road safety improvements that would not have been possible without placing a financial burden on Council or without additional support from our State or Federal counterparts,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

The projects that are earmarked to potentially benefit from Gannawarra Shire Council’s allocation of funding, subject to approval from the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission, include:

Improvements to the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis roads, Cohuna, including the installation of raised pedestrian crossings either side of Apex Park.
The installation of a roundabout and speed reduction measures at the intersection of Channel and Market streets, Cohuna.
A reduction of the speed limit within the Kerang central business district to 40 kilometres per hour.
Raising the road level at the school crossing at Boundary Street, Kerang, near Mitchell Street to reduce the speed of motorists entering this area.
Installing a roundabout, raised pedestrian crossings and speed reduction measures at the intersection of Maxwell, Shadforth and Wyndham streets, Kerang.
Installing speed reduction measures along Fitzroy and Nolan streets, either side of Vaughan Street.
Reconfiguring the intersection of Scoresby and Shadforth streets, Kerang, including the installation of a roundabout and new entry area to the Scoresby Street swimming pool parking area.
Installing speed reduction measures along Wyndham Street, Kerang, either side of Victoria Street.

“By taking a proactive approach when it comes to pedestrian and motorist safety, Council is aiming to reduce of the number of vehicle collisions that have occurred at these intersections over many years and improve pedestrian safety at these locations,” Mr Rollinson said.

Residents can provide feedback on the eight proposals before 5pm Friday, 17 January by using one of the following options:

“All feedback received will be considered when finalising the designs, with approved projects needing to be completed by 2027,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Council will keep residents updated regarding the status of these projects and when works occur throughout the next 12 months.”
