Recognising the Gannawarra's valuable volunteers
Published on 12 May 2023
Gannawarra Shire Council is pleased to be celebrating National Volunteer Week, which recognises the outstanding work volunteers undertake to support their community.
Occurring from Monday, 15 May to Sunday, 21 May, National Volunteer Week celebrates the significant contribution of the close to six million Australians who volunteer their time to support their communities.
“Council has celebrated National Volunteer Week for many years, as it enables us to recognise the important role volunteers play to make the Gannawarra a great place to live,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“This year’s theme for National Volunteer Week is ‘The Change Makers’, which highlights the powerful impact volunteers make supporting individuals and communities.
“The powerful role volunteers play in our communities was evident during the October-December 2022 floods, and is still evident today with our various community organisations leading the way with flood recovery efforts throughout the Gannawarra.”
Community volunteers play a key role in supporting various Council-led programs, including the Gannawarra Non-Emergency Transport Service, L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program, Meals on Wheels and the Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre.
“Whether it is delivering a hot meal to residents, transporting residents to medical appointments, helping visitors with tourism enquiries or ensuring our young people gain valuable driving experience, our volunteers are the face of the Gannawarra,” Mr Rollinson said.
