Skateboarders, BMX riders and scooter users now have a new place to test their skills following the completion of the Cohuna Skate Park redevelopment.
Located at Apex Park, the popular facility re-opened to the public on Friday, 4 June.
“Council is excited to see this popular facility back in use, which is now double the size of the original park,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.
“The Cohuna Skate Park redevelopment is a local example of advocacy in action, thanks to the dedication of local young people who campaigned for improvements to be undertaken.”
The redeveloped skate park incorporates the previous park’s features, with additional ramps, railings and riding areas catering for skateboarders, BMX riders and scooter users of all skill and age levels.
New features that complement the space include extra paths, open spaces, play areas and seating.
“For many young people, the Cohuna Skate Park represents a safe place to build positive social connections and feel involved in their community. The level of importance the Skate Park signifies to young people was demonstrated by the amount of input many locals have had into the layout and design process, with much of the creativity and passion for the re-development driven by the Gannawarra’s young people,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“The redevelopment was achieved thanks to a $250,000 grant from Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Local Sport Infrastructure Fund, which Council is grateful for.”
To mark the opening, Council and Northern District Community Health will host a ‘First Ride’ fun day at the skate park on Monday, 14 June. Further information about this event will be promoted via Facebook and Council’s website.
