The management of rural roadside weeds throughout the Gannawarra has received a boost, with the State Government providing support for this important program.

Minister for Local Government, Shaun Leane recently confirmed that Council would receive $61,943 from the Victorian Government’s Roadside Weeds and Pests Program to assist with efforts this financial year.

The funding will enable Council to plan and implement control activities for the management of weeds on municipal rural roadsides, such as boxthorn, horehound, khaki weed, prickly pear and Wheel Cactus. The funding will also assist with the management of pest animals, such as rabbits and foxes.

“Council is dedicated to managing pest and weed infestations on Council-managed roads and committed to the early prevention and control of weed species,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“In the past three years, Council has inspected approximately 1923 kilometres of roadsides and treated 481 kilometres through a variety of mechanical, manual and chemical control options.

“Council thanks the State Government for this funding and will continue to advocate for on-going funding for roadside weed and pest control in the Gannawarra.”
