Residents aged 60 years and over wanting to extend their digital skills are encouraged to take part in the free Social Seniors – Social Media and Digital Story Telling for Seniors program.

The program, developed in collaboration between Telstra, the State Government and Public Libraries Victoria Network, is targeted for people aged 60 years and over who already have some skills and confidence in using their mobile phone or tablet.

“The need to use mobile digital technology to keep connected continues to grow each year,” Gannawarra Library Service’s Acting Manager, Tami Leggett said.

“Participants do not need to have extensive experience to take part; just a willingness to learn.”

Participants will learn the following skills during the program:

  • Find and connect with online groups and social opportunities in the area;
  • Create short videos and digital content related to personal interests;
  • Participate regularly in community groups and activities using social media platforms;
  • Use digital technology in everyday life;
  • Manage online privacy and security; and
  • Have more confidence to go online to research areas of interest, manage banking, pay bills and access local services.

“It is a ‘bring your own device’ program, meaning participants are expected to bring their own internet-enabled smartphone or tablet with video capability,” Mrs Leggett said.

The program will be held across three two-hour sessions, with an information session to occur in the Meeting Room at the Sir John Gorton Library, Kerang on Tuesday, 11 February at 2pm.
