From 10-17 October 2016, Museum Victoria’s team of scientists, historians and curators are camping on the Murray to undertake a special anniversary ‘expedition’.

William Blandowski was the first scientist appointed to the newly opened Victorian Museum in 1854. He immediately started documenting the rich biodiversity found in Victoria through a series of expeditions. His first major expedition was to the Murray River in 1856 with basecamp established in the Gannawarra region.

To mark the 160th anniversary of that expedition, Museum Victoria and Gannawarra Shire Council, together with Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and the North Central Catchment Management Authority, are collaborating to explore and profile the rich nature offer of the region and its deep cultural and historical connections.

Mayor Lorraine Learmonth says the team will set up base in Cohuna from where they will survey Gunbower National Park and Gunbower State Forest, the river and surrounding areas.

"This collaboration with Museum Victoria will bring world class expertise to our area, and will help us to understand the significant value of the natural and cultural landscape that is on our doorstep. A range of events will be on offer during October, and I would encourage local people to get involved in this exciting project. By raising awareness of the special nature of our region, we aim to encourage new visitors to the Shire and support the growing tourism sector." Ms Learmonth says.
