Plans to create a town changing transformational weir pool at Quambatook will proceed thanks to a substantial financial grant from the State Government.

Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp visited Quambatook earlier today to announce that Council would receive $2.050 million from the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund to support the $2.4 million Sustainable Recreation Water for Quambatook project.

“The development of the Quambatook Weir Pool will provide an aquatic hub inspiring significant tourism opportunities, generate substantial local employment and transform and uplift the heart and liveability appeal of Quambatook,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

Key features of the project include a kayak launch and jetty near the Quambatook-Boort Road Bridge, an adventure playground adjacent to the Quambatook Caravan Park, a new pedestrian bridge over the Avoca River, a river sand beach area behind the Quambatook Tennis Club and a passive water recreation area at the Quambatook Weir Pool.

Works will also occur to install infrastructure that will hold water in this section of the Avoca River, with Council to secure a water allocation suitable for recreational and passive water activities.

“This project will create an amazing aquatic precinct that will be a retreat for residents and visitors to relax during the warmer months and the perfect place for younger community members to enjoy,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“Maintaining water in the Quambatook weir pool will also benefit the environment by improving natural flora and fauna, as well as the overall aquatic life of the Avoca River.

“Council thanks the State Government for their generous support for this project and looks forward to working with the wonderful Quambatook community during these transformational works.”

The Sustainable Recreation Water for Quambatook project forms part of Council’s $16.197 million Capital Works program outlined in the 2021/2022 Budget.
