Residents are encouraged to have their say on eight proposed road safety projects planned for the Gannawarra Shire, subject to approval from the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission.
Council has received funding from the Transport Accident Commission’s Safe Local Roads and Street Program, which will help all councils plan, design and deliver safety improvements on the highest risk local roads, intersections and precincts.

Cohuna Island Road pedestrian improvements, Cohuna
Proposed improvements to Cohuna Island Road include:
- Raised pedestrian crossings along Cohuna Island Road, to be placed either side of the Apex Park car park.
- Minor modifications to the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis roads.
Improvements to the intersection of Channel and Market streets, Cohuna
Proposed improvements to the intersection of Channel and Market streets, Cohuna include:
- The installation of a roundabout.
- The installation of traffic slowing measures for motorists travelling along Market Street towards Kirby Street, and motorists travelling along Channel Street towards William Street.
- Reconfiguring car parking along Channel Street outside the Cohuna Preschool.
- Reconstructing the accessible parking bay located on Market Street outside the Cohuna Neighbourhood House.
Change to speed limits within the Kerang central business district
To improve safety for motorists, Council is proposing to reduce the speed limit to 40 kilometres per hour for the following roads:
- Fitzroy Street, between Scoresby and Wellington streets.
- Scoresby Street, between Nolan and Albert streets.
- Victoria Street, between Scoresby and Wellington streets. This proposal would mean that the speed limit along Victoria Street between Wellington and Wyndham streets would be 40 kilometres per hour.
Council will also advocate for the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning to reduce the speed limit to 40 kilometres per hour along Wellington Street between Albert and Nolan streets.
Improvements to the Boundary Street school crossing (near Mitchell Street), Kerang
Council is proposing to improve safety measures at the Boundary Street school crossing (near Mitchell Street), Kerang.
As part of this proposal, the road level will be raised to encourage motorists to reduce their speed when entering this crossing.
Improvements to the intersection of Maxwell, Shadforth and Wyndham streets, Kerang
Proposed improvements to the intersection of Maxwell, Shadforth and Wyndham streets, Kerang include:
- The installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Shadforth and Wyndham streets.
- The installation of raised pedestrian crossings on the northern and eastern sides of the intersection of Shadforth and Wyndham streets.
- The installation of traffic slowing measures along Shadforth Street, south of Maxwell Street, and for motorists travelling along Wyndham Street towards Fitzroy Street.
Nolan and Vaughan streets, and Fitzroy and Vaughan streets, Kerang intersection improvements
Proposed improvements to the intersection of intersections of Nolan and Vaughan streets, and Fitzroy and Vaughan streets, Kerang include:
- The installation of traffic slowing measures along Fitzroy Street, either side of Vaughan Street.
- The installation of traffic slowing measures along Nolan Street, either side of Vaughan Street.
Improvements to the intersection of Scoresby and Shadforth streets, Kerang
Proposed improvements to the intersection of Scoresby and Shadforth streets, Kerang, include:
- The installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Scoresby and Shadforth streets.
- Reconfiguring the entrance to the Scoresby Street swimming pool parking area.
- Upgrade of existing street lighting.
- New footpath crossing points.
Improvements to the intersection of Victoria and Wyndham streets, Kerang
Proposed improvements to the intersection of Victoria and Wyndham streets, Kerang, include:
- The installation traffic slowing measures along Wyndham Street, either side of Victoria Street.
All of these proposed projects will reduce the instances of vehicle collisions that have occurred at these intersections over many years, as well as improve pedestrian safety.
